We work to build the capacity of the Dominican Mission Sisters in Ndola, Zambia to reach the most underserved with
essential health, education and social services.

Our history

The community we serve

Distribution of funds and supply donations spans the footprint of the Dominican Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Ndola, Zambia, including the Barefoot Community School, St. Dominic's Mission Hospital, and St. Anthony's Home for Orphans and Vulnerable Children.

The Barefoot Community School - Ndola, Zambia

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world".  - Nelson Mandela

The Dominican Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus opened a school dedicated to the mission of educating children in the community who cannot afford to or whose unique circumstances permit them from attending government-run schools. Aptly named, the Barefoot Community School offers education for students from all reaches of the Kavu peri urban region, many of whom walk (barefoot) for many miles to receive this education.  "Barefoot School" means all are welcome, even if they are to poor to buy uniforms that are required by other schools.

This 3-room school educates children ages 9-25 with classrooms organized by level of education (rather than age). Though there are approximately 72 different languages and dialects spoken across Zambia, all lessons are presented in English, equipping the children with critical skills to enhance their opportunities.

St. Dominic's Mission Hospital - Ndola, Zambia

"They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel." - Maya Angelou
The Dominican Missionary Sisters set forth with the goal of opening a health clinic in Ndola in 1993, as the nearest hospital at the time was a journey of nearly 20 km. (12.5 mi.) down bumpy dirt trails for a population with limited access to motorized vehicles.

What started as a small clinic (the Kavu Health Centre) and found humble beginnings in a dilapidated two-room beer hall grew to accommodate an increased breath of medical services. The Kavu Health Centre expanded to house a labor and delivery ward, a pharmacy, a dental clinic and an emergency room. In 2016, the partners of the Dominican Sisters granted the funds to build a Theatre addition (Operating Room) as a testament to the Sisters' commitment to care for under-served patients in the community.

The Theatre addition officially raised the Kavu Health Centre's status to that of a "hospital", proudly renamed "St. Dominic's Mission Hospital".

St. Anthony's Home for Orphans and Vulnerable Children - Ndola, Zambia

"Kind words can be short and easy to speak: but their echos are truly endless." - Mother Teresa
The St. Anthony's Home for Orphans and Vulnerable Children houses a large population of orphans and physically and medically handicapped children in the community of Ndola.  The basic necessities of food, shelter, clothing, education, and care are provided through adulthood. The Dominican Sisters' goal is to find safe, loving and nurturing families for each of these children.
